Abstract

The return of Indonesian migrant workers’ children from Malaysia to Indonesia creates educational reintegration challenges that extend beyond academic adjustment to include language, social, cultural, and religious experiences. Previous studies have predominantly examined migrant children’s educational access, transnational educational experiences, or religious moderation as separate issues, leaving limited understanding of how Islamic Religious Education responds to cross-border educational experiences after repatriation. This study examines the transformation of moderation-oriented Islamic Religious Education for repatriated children of Indonesian migrant workers from Malaysia, with particular attention to inclusive learning and students’ adaptation processes. A qualitative case study was conducted at SMKN 5 Malang. Data were collected from 13 - 14 May 2026 through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving seven purposively selected informants: two Islamic Religious Education teachers and five repatriated students. Data were analyzed through data condensation, coding and categorization, thematic display, interpretation, and verification using source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal three interrelated patterns namely the transformation of Islamic Religious Education toward more dialogic and contextual learning practices; the integration of religious moderation through classroom learning and educational interactions; and inclusive learning as a space supporting students’ academic, social, and religious adaptation. The study’s novelty lies in integrating these three dimensions within the educational reintegration of repatriated students with cross-border educational experiences. Future research should employ comparative or longitudinal designs across multiple educational settings to examine the longer-term dynamics of repatriation and educational adaptation.
